A $500 website can be a fair deal or a trap, and the setup price alone doesn't tell you which. What matters is the monthly fee, whether you own the site, what happens if you leave, and what the $500 covers. Mine is $500 setup + $80/month, with no contract. Here's what to check on any offer.

What my $500 covers

I'll use my own plan as the example, since I can't speak for anyone else's. The $500 setup gets you a custom site of about 6 pages, built for phones. That includes local SEO setup: service pages, town pages, structured data, and help setting up your Google Business Profile and Bing Places listing. You also get an AI chatbot trained on your business and call and form tracking.

The $80 a month covers hosting, SSL, security, small edits within 2 business days, and ongoing SEO upkeep. I'm one person in Hicksville, so I do the design, the code, and the phone calls myself.

The site goes live about a week after your content arrives. "Content" means your services, your hours, a few photos, and anything you want said. Slow content is the usual reason a launch takes longer than that.

What $500 does not buy

Be wary of anyone who promises more than a site can deliver. SEO takes months, and I don't promise rankings or leads. Neither should anyone else. A new site gives you a solid foundation and a real chance to be found. It doesn't guarantee phone calls.

Bigger sites are quoted separately. If you need 20 pages, online ordering, or a booking system, that's a different conversation and a different price.

Questions to ask any designer

Before you pay anyone, even me, ask these:

  1. What's the monthly fee, and what does it cover? A low setup price with a $200 monthly is just a different way to charge a lot. For comparison, typical freelancer hosting-and-edit plans run about $0 to $100 a month.
  2. Do I own the site and the domain? Get the answer in writing. Many "free website" offers leave you owning nothing.
  3. Is there a contract or cancellation fee? There shouldn't need to be.
  4. What happens if I cancel? You should get your files and your domain. I cover exactly that in what happens to your website if you cancel your designer.
  5. How fast are edits, and who makes them? I commit to 2 business days. If the answer is "open a ticket," ask how long tickets take.
  6. Will it be set up to be found on Google? Ask about page titles, structured data, and a Google Business Profile, not just how it looks.
  7. Who actually does the work? One person, a team, or an offshore queue.

How $500 compares with other routes

Typical ranges, not quotes: a freelancer often charges about $1,500 to $5,000 up front, and an agency about $5,000 to $15,000 or more. A DIY builder like Wix costs little to start, but you build it yourself, pay monthly, and the site stays on their platform. For the full side-by-side, see what a small-business website costs on Long Island.

A low price usually means one of three things: a template, a lot of the work pushed onto you, or money made back through the monthly. Mine is low because I keep the scope tight, work alone, and use the same solid build for every client, with real content written for each business. I'd rather you know that than wonder.

Who it fits, and who it doesn't

A $500 setup suits a service business that needs a clear, professional, findable site: a plumber, an electrician, a salon, a small shop. If you're in Hicksville, Levittown or anywhere else in Nassau County, you're exactly who I build for.

It doesn't suit a business that needs a complicated store, custom software, or a big content site. Those cost more anywhere, and I'll tell you so.

What I'd do in your position

Get two or three quotes. Write down the setup price, the monthly, the contract length, who owns the site, and the turnaround on edits. Compare those lines, not the logos. Then check my pricing page against the others and pick the one you trust to pick up the phone.

Frequently asked questions

Is a $500 website on Long Island legitimate?

It can be, if the monthly fee is clear, you own the site, and there's no contract. Mine is $500 setup + $80/month. Ask any provider for the monthly, the ownership terms, and what happens if you cancel, in writing.

What is usually not included in a $500 website?

Large sites, online stores, booking systems, and custom software are normally quoted separately. No honest provider includes a guarantee of rankings or leads either, because SEO takes months.

How long does a $500 website take to launch?

With me, the site goes live about a week after your content arrives. Most delays come from waiting on text and photos, not from the build.

Do I own a $500 website?

With Garbacki Digital, yes. There is no contract and you own the site and your domain. With other providers, ask directly, because many 'free' or very cheap offers leave you owning nothing.
