How to Get Your First 10 Google Reviews Without Begging
Solo web developer building custom sites and AI chatbots for local businesses on Long Island.
Most Long Island contractors, plumbers, and dentists I talk to say the same thing: "I don't want to be that guy asking for reviews all the time."
You don't have to be. Here's how to get your first 10 without feeling like you're begging.
Make it a one-tap thing
The biggest mistake is asking for a review verbally and expecting someone to remember to do it later. They won't.
Instead, text the client a link the day after the job is done. Not an email — a text. One tap and they're in Google.
You can generate a link to your Google Business Profile in about 30 seconds. Paste it in a template text: "Hey [name]—thanks for having us. If you got good service, we'd really appreciate a quick Google review here: [link]. Takes 2 minutes."
That's it. No pressure, no follow-up guilt.
Ask at the right moment
Don't ask when they're writing a check or dealing with a mess. Ask when they're happy.
For a plumber in Hicksville or an HVAC tech in Massapequa, that's right after the job is done and working. For a dentist, it's after a cleaning, not after a root canal.
You'll get a way higher conversion if you time it right.
Make it part of your closing
If you're already pulling out your phone to send an invoice or take a final photo, send the review link at the same time.
Add it to your standard job-close routine. No extra step, no extra thinking.
Track who you've asked
Keep a simple list or note in your phone of which clients you've sent the link to. You don't want to ask the same person twice.
After you hit 10 reviews, keep doing this. It takes 30 seconds per job.
Don't overthink the ask
Clients who got good service *want* to leave a review. They don't need a long explanation or multiple reminders.
One text with a link. Done.
Why this matters
Your first 10 reviews unlock a lot. Google shows your profile higher in searches around Nassau County. New clients see that other people trust you.
After 10, you'll probably get organic reviews from people who just search your name.
The hard part isn't getting reviews—it's asking. A one-tap link removes the friction.
If you want to make lead capture even easier after the job is done, an AI chatbot on your website can handle the follow-up while you're driving to the next call. Learn how chatbots actually work for local businesses.
