What Is Local SEO?

A plain-English explanation of local SEO — what it means, what it does for a service business, and what actually moves the needle.

Local SEO is the set of things you do to make your business show up when someone nearby searches for what you offer.

When someone types "plumber near me" or "dentist in Garden City" into Google, the results they see first aren't random websites — they're businesses Google believes are located nearby and relevant to the search. Local SEO is how you get into those results.

What local SEO actually covers

There are two distinct places Google shows local businesses:

The Map Pack — the three results with the map at the top of a local search. These come entirely from your Google Business Profile. If your GBP is incomplete or unverified, you won't appear here regardless of how good your website is.

Organic results — the regular blue links below the map. These come from your website. They take longer to build but they compound. A well-optimized site ranking for "Nassau County landscaper" keeps generating calls for years.

Local SEO covers both. Most small businesses only think about one.

What actually moves the needle

The things that have the most impact, in rough order:

Google Business Profile completeness. Category selection, services listed, photos added, hours accurate, description written. A half-filled profile underperforms a complete one even with the same number of reviews.

Review count and recency. Google treats recent reviews as a trust signal. A business with 5 reviews from 2022 and nothing since is effectively stale. Asking happy customers for reviews — directly, not through a form — is the fastest lever you have.

Your website mentioning where you are. If your site never says "Hicksville," "Nassau County," or "Long Island" in its actual content, Google can't be confident you serve that area. Your location needs to be in page titles, headings, and body copy — not just in the footer address.

Mobile page speed. More than half of local searches happen on a phone. A site that loads slowly on mobile ranks lower and loses visitors before they read a word.

Consistency across directories. Your business name, address, and phone number should match exactly across your website, Google, Yelp, Apple Maps, and anywhere else you're listed. Inconsistencies — even small ones like "St." vs. "Street" — dilute the trust signal.

What local SEO is not

It's not paying Google for ads (that's a different channel). It's not buying links or using automated tools that claim to "boost your ranking." It's not a one-time setup — it requires occasional attention over time.

It's also not something only big agencies can do. The businesses ranking well in local search for most service categories got there by doing the basics consistently: complete profile, real reviews, location-specific content on their site. Those basics are accessible to any business.

The timeline

Honest answer: local search results typically take 2–4 months to respond to changes you make. New reviews start influencing your Map Pack ranking in weeks. On-site content improvements take longer to affect organic results.

The reason to start now is that every month you wait, businesses that are doing these things are compounding their advantage.
